Sounds Like Teaching to Me
When you go shopping, a little discount never hurts. However, you aren’t always a part of the sale demographic for that day. Yet, what are they going to do — make them prove they’re a teacher?
Technically, this person taught this cashier something, which falls under the job description of a teacher, So, this retail worker saw it fit to apply the discount. This must have been a bright spot in the afternoon for this shopper!
Whoops, a Typo
Working a register, it’s up to you to input people’s coupons and discounts correctly. However, no one is perfect and sometimes accidents happen.
We think this happy accident must have really made some people’s days when this person worked at Hobby Lobby. Really, Jenny was just returning the favor when customers were sweet to her. It must have been a breath of fresh air — considering all that retail workers often deal with.
Helping Them Out
You see quite a varied crowd when you work somewhere like a mall. After all, with so many stores and people wandering around, anyone might walk in.
When these seniors came in, the OP here noticed that the novels were bought with change each time. After seeing the women scrape together the money like this, Jane made sure that there were plenty of discounts for them.
Love Is Hard
If you’ve ever hit the dating scene, you know that there’s probably a higher chance of a date going badly than you meeting your soulmate.
There are few things that hurt as much as getting ready and hyped up for a date only for them to leave you waiting where you were supposed to meet. The least that Benjamin thought he could do here was supply a complimentary hot cocoa for this broken heart.
I’ll Cover This One
When you’re a kid and you see you’re parents upset, you want to do what you can to help. From a kid’s perspective, it’s easy to see how pizza is the answer.
Actually, most adults might agree with him! Unfortunately, this little guy didn’t have the cash to cover the pizza. This retail worker wasn’t about to deny him. They gave him a “discount” and just paid for the pizzas themselves.
Doing What You Can
Thanks to a certain policy at the OP’s former workplace, they were able to make a customer’s day just a bit easier. This business gave their employees a bit of wiggle room per customer to help out when they saw it was necessary.
It was a policy that this person was more than happy to take advantage of. When the OP saw a mother in tears over her grocery bill, they couldn’t just let her put her food back. Plus, who should have to scrape and struggle to keep their family fed? This cashier was doing what little they could in order to help.
A Lesson in Sales
There are some moments when you grab something off the sales rack, excited for such a deal. Sadly, you get to the checkout to learn it was mistakenly placed there or moved by another customer.
When this person got to the register, they were disappointed to learn it was more expensive and decided not to buy it as a result. An excellent saleswoman, this retail worker decided that bargaining a sale was better than no sale at all.
Keeping You Safe
There are some conditions that are nearly unimaginable if you haven’t experienced them. Living in your car is no walk in the park. Even finding somewhere to park to sleep can be a real hassle.
This person had more than one run-in with authorities just for parking in the wrong spot. A restaurant manager noticed what was happening and stepped in to make sure this person at least had a place to put their car.
Let Me Take a Look at Our Discounts
Glasses are something that a lot of people simply can’t go without. If you can’t see properly, everyday tasks like driving or even walking around become more difficult.
This person doesn’t think it’s fair for customers — especially kind ones — to have to choose something based on cost rather than quality. So, they apply discount codes wherever they can.
A Memorable Choice
As a child, you don’t always understand when an adult has stepped in to make something more accessible to you. Few adults can bear a crying little face, even if they’re a customer rather than family.
One cashier wasn’t going to give this family a break on the price but when the OP asked the next person, that cashier said it was on sale! It wasn’t until more than a decade later that they realized the cashier gave them a break on the price.
Getting Mom Christmas Gifts
When a holiday like Christmas rolls around, you might look just as much forward to giving gifts as you are to opening the presents addressed to you.
All this person wanted to do was buy their mom something nice for Christmas. The only problem was that the perfect gift didn’t come with the perfect price tag. That was, until the clerk stepped in. They remembered him more than 50 years later too.
Oh No, I Forgot It!
Coupons are a great way to get deals. Still, not many of us spend our free time clipping them out. Even if you do, you have to remember to bring them, right?
Apparently, there was a bit of code of honor at this Target that allowed customers to mention coupons they forgot. If they were lucky, the cashier would have it lying around. This cashier noticed this customer could use it and gave them a nudge in the right direction.
A Special Drink
It’s hard to tell kids “no” when they come in trying to make a transaction, isn’t it? Who has the heart to tell this little guy he’s not getting a cake pop because he doesn’t understand money yet?
Definitely not this cashier! Working a shift at Starbucks, they just couldn’t turn this kid down. Not only was he here for a snack, he was trying to get something to cheer himself up after an argument at home. This barista wanted him to know he was always welcome to pop in for cake and a drink when he was down.
Throwing It Out Anyways
When a store closes down for the day, there are some things they can’t just store to sell the next day or, at the very least, they don’t.
This deli worker knew that a lot of food was going to waste at the end of every day. They also knew it could go to a better cause than filling the garbage. So, they spread the word as much as they could to those in need.
A Quiet Kindness
There are some acts of kindness that are quieter than others. They may brighten people’s day in small ways rather than making a pointed improvement.
After hearing how many onion rings they were actually supposed to give the customers, this employee decided that there was no way that was happening. Instead, he gave everyone as many onion rings in their order as possible.
“On the House”
There are some people who go through things they shouldn’t have to. No one should have to scrape together the last of what they have to buy a snack.
When Lexy here sees people who are struggling, asking for the cheapest thing they have at the bakery, she makes sure that customer gets a 100% discount on their purchase. Even though it comes out of her own pocket, this cashier isn’t going to charge someone in that position.
For the Goats
When you care for livestock, there are some times that you need something a little unusual. Once in a while, even the feed store doesn’t have something for you. One thing that the local feed store didn’t carry was syringes but this person desperately needed them.
By the time Lynne got to the pharmacy, she was nearly out of hope. While she wasn’t necessarily supposed to, this pharmacist wasn’t about to let those goats go without.
This person paints a pretty upsetting picture from this position. A sad child holding a brownie they can’t afford isn’t something you can just walk past, is it?
The teacher definitely couldn’t watch her student suffer like this. While the OP may not have had money for the bake sale that day, one kind teacher stepped in to make sure he still got a sweet treat. It left a lasting memory on this student, even years later.
Some coupons bring you endless deals. Other times, stores don’t let you stack them because, well, they’re trying to turn a profit, aren’t they?
Still, there’s always the potential for a “mistake in the system” where one coupon accidentally gets used a multiple times on a single order. This cashier couldn’t help but step in when they saw this person struggling. After all, these were necessary school supplies.
A Little Boost
There are times when a dollar or two really matters. For instance, if you’re a kid scraping together an allowance, you might have tighter margins.
As for this OP, that pound or two made all the difference. So, this cashier did what she could and applied a few discounts to make sure that Lili could still get the folders she wanted and needed that day, all thanks to this retail worker.
An Important Caveat
When you work at a store, that doesn’t mean you control the prices. Odds are, you have little to no power over the prices.
Sometimes, though, you have the chance to put your thumb on the scale and help out a customer when you need to. This person just really couldn’t bear charging customers so much and used what power they had to bring the price down a bit.
Saving a Little Money
When you go to get donuts for a morning, you might pick up one or two for yourself or you might treat yourself with a box of a dozen to take home.
When this person stopped in for a few donuts, the employee’s reaction really surprised them. It looked like he was doing all he could to fit as many donuts in the box as possible! It turned out, he just knew it was a better price.
Maybe a Mistake, Maybe Not
Cashiers make mistakes all the time. After all, they’re human beings and expecting perfection is something that’s doomed to fail.
As for this person, they just assumed that thanks to a typo from the cashier, they managed to get a better deal than they expected. After hearing all these stories, though, they’re starting to wonder if it was a mistake or a little act of kindness.
If you’ve ever worked in retail, you’ve probably heard hundreds of customers make the joke about the product not scanning, so it must be free! That was a dream that this OP was willing to fulfill.
Particularly, when they heard a couple really trying to budget their groceries, they knew that a few unscanned items wouldn’t be missed. We’re sure that the couple was happy they could get a little more than they had expected!
Choose Whether It’s Good or Bad
Working at Kohl’s sounds like a job where, quite honestly, you might deal with some people who aren’t so mindful of the fact that the cashier they’re talking to is, in fact, a human being.
When it comes to this cashier, kindness really does count. If you wanted to save, a good attitude would do you better. With a sharper tone or harsher words, you might just find yourself fully out of luck on your coupons.
Saving Up for Something Special
When you hear someone has been saving up for something for an entire year, you know that they really want what they’re purchasing and put the work into it.
A year’s worth of money is a lot to spend in one place, though. Jes didn’t want to see all this woman’s hard work go to one thing so she did her best and gave as much of a discount as possible. Apparently, it really made a difference to this woman.
Your Kindness Counts
As we’ve covered more than once, retail isn’t an easy job. Some days, it seems like the customers are more demanding but with less patience than other days. Oftentimes, the customers who are kind can really stand out to you in a good way.
Ashley did what she could to tip the scales based on how the customer treated the staff. They weren’t penalized, per se, but this OP wasn’t about to go the extra mile for mean customers.
It Won’t Be
There are some customers you’ll run into when you’re in retail that you wish you didn’t have to charge, especially if you’re selling basic needs.
At Walmart, this person couldn’t help but feel sympathetic for the customers who were doing their best with what they had, even if it wasn’t much. So, they did what they could to give them a discount, even if it might have fallen outside of company policy.
Come This Way Please
Retail isn’t always a cashier behind a counter waiting to ring you up. Essentially, there’s a retail side to your flight plans and trips to the airport. If you’ve ever taken a flight, you know that tensions can be high at an airport.
After all, it’s a building full of people who are stressed and trying to stay on schedule. Even so, the employees you interact with still have feelings and kindness is going to get you further.
Didn’t Seem Right to Take It
There are some jobs that you don’t always think about as being hard. When you stop by a hospital to visit a friend after a small procedure, you might see the parking fee as a minor annoyance.
Then again, hospitals see a lot of really dire situations where the patients don’t always leave. Can you imagine having to ask for money from people who are rushing to their dying relatives? The least this person thought they could do was to refund this woman.
If you’re loyal to your favorite coffee shop or fast food joint, you might have the chance to earn a free coffee after you make so many purchases.
These common promotions are used to pull you in and get you to buy more coffee. If you’re nice to this barista, though, you might get to redeem two free cups of coffee for an extra cup “on the house.” It’s a small gesture but it surely brightens customers’ days.
For the Presents
The OP might have assumed that this cashier was inexperienced and made a mistake but, as we’ve seen, you might just be dealing with someone really nice.
No matter what the story was, this person managed to walk away with a great deal. While the sale may have only been on Christmas items, all the cashier needed to hear was that these pens could be a present and she was ready to include them in on the deal.
Free Ice Cream
Working at an ice cream shop in the summer would likely lead to busy shifts. We’re sure not every customer who comes in is as pleasant as the last.
Telling a customer that they need more money than they have can be awkward and really embarrassing for the customer. When this cashier realized the situation, they did what they could to make sure that she got her ice cream and saved her money for something else.
Just a Little Kindness
Retail workers, as we seem to have to keep repeating, are people too. The unfortunate thing is that customers often treat them like sounding boards for their frustrations.
So, to many retail workers, kindness can really stand out. This person seemed really touched by whatever this customer said to them — maybe it was just an infectiously good mood. Either way, they both walked away from the transaction with a brighter outlook.
Working in a school isn’t an easy job. After all, you want to fulfill your duties but you also want to make sure the students get everything they need.
Anyone who has had a school lunch knows that they aren’t always the most filling option out there. That’s because the staff has to feed hundreds in a short matter of time. This lunch server wanted to make sure everyone was happy, even if it meant waiting until their boss stepped away.
Patience Pays Off
There are some jobs that would lead you to sell a range of items. If you work at a craft store, you see people working on all sorts of projects come through.
When the customers were kind, this person had no problem taking a few extra moments to look for any discount they could apply. If anyone wanted to try one of the craft store’s more expensive items, this Twitter user wasn’t afraid to pull out the employee discount.
It Looks Great on You!
When you shop at vintage stores, you might find something one-of-a-kind that you have no guarantee will be there the next time you visit.
That’s why this customer was a bit emotional about this whole encounter. After all, not only was it a beautiful piece of clothing but it had a meaningful history to it. When the cashier bought it, they were so moved that it brought them to tears!
Gifts for Kindness
This person wasn’t about to give their place of employment away. Can you blame someone for not letting people know so that they don’t get in trouble?
Still, we have to say, it sounds like they must have some very happy customers pulling out of the drive-thru! If people are nice to them or have kids in the car, this OP is sure to slip a few extra pieces of chicken into their meals.
Well, Look at That!
Not everyone loves grocery shopping. Still, it bears repeating that you have to remember not to take that frustration out on your cashier.
While not every conversation is entertaining or warm, the ones that are particularly kind come with a few benefits! To put it quite simply, if you do something to brighten this cashier’s day, they’ll return the favor in any way they can.
Trying Their Best
Of course, retail workers can’t stop every customer from paying more than they can afford or putting items back to keep things under budget.
This retail worker did everything they could to make sure none of the customers they helped went home without food. We’re sure that this is one thing that would be hard to swallow when you can’t do anything to help.
A Few Extra Coupons
A used bookstore seems like a pretty cool place to work. You’d get the chance to check out a wide variety of books and meet other readers.
If you already have a shared hobby with someone — especially one as fundamentally important as reading — you might feel inclined to help them out. As for this cashier, there were some customers that they were willing to pull out all of the stops for.
Setting Things Aside
When you work somewhere that offers food service, you often have leftovers at the end of the night. It’s not often that you use exactly as many ingredients as you started with.
So, at the end of the night, the staff often has to throw away the leftovers. This person thought the least they could do was set them next to the dumpster, in case anyone needed them. Yet, the city seemed to disagree.
A Compliment to Remember
We’ve already seen a few cashiers who were so flattered they couldn’t help but feel like they should give something to the customer in return.
In most cases, this is whatever discount they’re allowed to give. It seems like this Twitter user managed to pick the perfect compliment to give her cashier. After all, she appreciated it enough to pull out the serious discounts, ultimately saving this person hundreds of dollars.
He Looked So Sad
Working somewhere as busy as IKEA, you ultimately can’t please every single customer you see. Yet, some customers stick out and seem deserving of extra special service.
This IKEA employee couldn’t just let this young customer leave with big tears in his eyes like this. So, they took instant action to buy the stuffed animal themselves before finding the family in the parking lot to give it to the young boy.
Making a Difficult Choice
There are some choices a person should never have to make. Choosing between your children’s food and their medicine is one of those decisions.
It’s one that this OP couldn’t just watch happen either. They stepped in and paid for the items the mom couldn’t afford. They also waited until the family had left the store to return some of their own items.
